weather trending

a weather chart:

today's balmy weather-- 70 degrees and humid when i came home-- inspired me to curiosity. is this a normal weather trend or a result of global warming? if i inspected the high temp on this day for every year of my life, would i see a neat and obvious trend toward higher temperatures?

as you can see-- more clearly if you click through-- this isn't the case. it's not unprecendented for us to enjoy a temperature of 70 or greater on january 5th, here in central north carolina.

i guess this wasn't very scientific. i could look at the mean temperature for january for the last thirty-um years, but it's a manual process and i don't feel like it.

i guess the lesson here, though, is that although the global warming situation is clearly dire, warm weather in january isn't necessarily a problem.

Have you seen An Inconvenient Truth? You might change your mind. I've always remembered the south being warmish in January. Snow caps are melting away. Look at photos of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

A one degree increase in an average temperature can affect the oceans, etc.

i'm not saying there *isn't* a problem with global warming and that it's not causing problems (like polar bears being put on the endangered list and the submersion of an island, recently, and i have seen the photos of kilimanjaro). i was just trying to say that a 70 degree day in january isn't a problem in and of itself and might not be the result of global warming (or maybe it is).

i have not seen an inconvenient truth yet but plan to.

like i said, data from one day isn't enough to see trends.

I watched it over the holidays. Combined with the balmy weather here I have to say I am disturbed.

"Global Warming" is a crap term for it- it really should be called "climate change"- many places will get colder, particularly those that are balmy by the grace of warm currents like the Gulf Stream.

This is true, because it confuses people into thinking that it must be getting warmer everywhere for the theory to be true. Whereas it actually refers to the average global temperature overall, so local effects are largely nonpredictive.

Today it was over 70 in New Jersey, which I feel safe saying is NOT normal.

And there's been no frost, so all my bulbs are coming up. Tulips in January!

we're having the same thing here. daffodils coming up, trees blooming. weeks of no frost at night have tricked a lot of the plants around here.
